Tarr Inlet cuts deep into Glacier Bay National Park, offering one of the most dramatic glacier frontages accessible by boat in North America. The star here is Margerie Glacier, a tidewater glacier with a towering blue-white face that calves directly into the water, and the surrounding peaks and moraine-streaked ice fields fill the frame in every direction. Position yourself as close as regulations allow to the glacier face for wide shots that emphasize its scale, or zoom in on the fractured seracs and layered blue ice for abstract detail. Overcast days actually work in your favor here, softening harsh reflections on the ice and bringing out the deep blues. A telephoto lens helps capture calving events from a safe distance, while a wide angle pulls in the full panoramic scope of the inlet. Have your camera ready at all times since calving happens without warning. (Glacier Bay National Park, Alaska, United States)
