High in the Karwendel above Hinterriß, the Tölzer Hütte am Schafreuter sits peacefully just below the Schafreuter peak, looking out over the ridge line. From the terrace you face a wall of tall rocky peaks, so you don't have to venture very far to start finding photogenic views. The hut with the peaks soaring behind it gives an amazing contrast and sense of size, and because it faces east there is good light on it for most of the day. Sunrise and sunset are both extremely photogenic. If you continue on the trail up toward the Schafreuter summit the view widens out and reaches the Bavarian lakes on a clear day. You can only get here on foot (roughly a two and a half to three hours hike) from the car parks in the Rißtal near Hinterriß. Although the hike is steep in some parts it is well worth the walk for the view alone. The hut is open from roughly mid-May to mid-October, with a small winter room left open for skier the rest of the year. There is no fee to hike and explore the area. If you want to stay for sunset and experiment with astrophotography you may need to book in advance to ensure there is space for you to spend the night. (Hinterriß, Tyrol, Austria)
