Tracy Arm Fjord is a dramatic glacial inlet southeast of Juneau, where sheer granite walls rise over a mile straight out of the water, waterfalls cascade down moss-covered rock faces, and the twin Sawyer Glaciers calve directly into emerald green water crowded with icebergs. You will almost certainly be shooting from a tour boat, so work the bow or upper deck for unobstructed wide compositions, and use a telephoto in the 100-400mm range to isolate ice details, wildlife, and the glaciers up close. The narrow fjord channels light in interesting ways, with soft diffused conditions on overcast days that bring out the blue tones in the ice without harsh shadows on the walls. Morning departures from Juneau typically reach the glaciers in midday light, so prioritize the reflective icebergs and wildlife encounters early in the approach. Keep your camera ready at all times as wildlife sightings, including humpback whales, harbor seals, and bald eagles, happen quickly. (Tracy Arm, Alaska, United States)
