Tron Kirk

Tron Kirk - Photo by Viraj Vimawala1 / 1

Built in the 1630s and sitting directly on the Royal Mile, Tron Kirk is one of Edinburgh's most recognisable landmarks, its tall steeple rising sharply against the surrounding Old Town roofline. The mix of Gothic and Palladian architecture gives you interesting details to work with, from the pointed spire and arched windows to the sturdy stone facade weathered by centuries of Scottish weather. A wide-angle or 24-35mm lens works well for capturing the full height of the building from across the street, while a longer focal length lets you isolate the steeple against dramatic skies or compress it with the surrounding tenements. Overcast days are ideal here since they eliminate harsh shadows on the stonework and bring out the texture of the sandstone. Position yourself on the opposite pavement to get the full facade, and shoot in the early morning before the Royal Mile fills with tourists. (Edinburgh, Scotland)
