Standing at the rim of this massive volcanic crater in Death Valley, you have sweeping views down into a deep bowl of rust, orange, and black volcanic rock that photographs unlike almost anything else in the American Southwest. The scale is dramatic, and the layered colors in the crater walls are the main subject, so a wide angle lens works best to capture both the full depth below and the expansive desert landscape stretching behind you. Walk the rim trail to find your angle; the western side gives you the best light in the morning, when low sun rakes across the crater walls and brings out the texture and color contrast. Late afternoon light also works well from the eastern rim looking west. Wind can be strong here, so brace yourself or your tripod. The parking area is right at the rim, making this one of the most accessible geological features in the park. (Death Valley, California, United States)
