Valley View is a roadside overlook along U.S. Routes 17 and 50 just east of Ashby Gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains, offering a sweeping view south-southeast across the Piedmont toward the small community of Paris in Fauquier County. The scene works best when you let the rolling hills and patchwork of fields and tree lines build depth into the frame, with the valley floor pulling your eye into the distance. A telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range helps compress the layers of ridgelines and bring distant details closer, while a wider lens captures the full breadth of the landscape. Early morning is ideal when mist often settles into the low-lying areas, adding atmosphere and separating the planes of the composition. The overlook is accessible directly from the roadside with minimal walking required, and fall foliage typically peaks here in mid to late October, making it one of the best seasons to visit.
