Varhaug gamle kirkegård (Varhaug old cemetery) has been in use for almost 700 years, but there is no documentation of those who have been buried here through the ages. During World War II, the Germans occupied the cemetery and used 6 acres of it for military purposes. Cannon positions were set up and the cemetery wall was removed. The base of the tower and the bell tower that remained after the old church were removed. Tombstones were also removed if the Germans needed more space. The neighbours were shaken by the grave insult. They rescued some of the tombs that the Germans had removed. These were put in place when the war ended. In 1951, the current chapel was built to replace an older one that had fallen into disrepair. The original church bells from 1791 are still used in the bell tower. (Varhaug, Norway)
