Vaxholms Kastell
At the beginning of the 16th century, the prime minister Svante Nilsson Sture built Vaxholm's Fortress after it was decided that Stockholm needed a new and stronger fortress to be able to block the strait at Pålsunden and Oxdjupet. The stretch of water below the building was formerly the main sea route to Stockholm. Thus, the fortress was strategically situated to defend the city from naval attacks. In the 1800s the grounds were strengthened and expanded into the fort we see today. Today the restored fort features period furnishings and military relics, along with amazing views looking out over the surrounding strait. (Vaxholm, Sweden)
