This perfect Vieste Old Town Viewpoint sits on the cliff edge running along the southern edge of the old town. From this terrace the whole medieval quarter runs out along a ridge of white limestone to the Chiesa Rettoria di San Francesco at the tip. Whitewashed and cream houses stack right to the edges of the rock, and below them the cliff drops straight into the sea, dotted with small caves and arches at the water line. The church at the end, with its square bell tower and a history going back to 1438, is easy to highlight from this viewpoint. Using a mid-length lens lets you highlight the line from the cliff base to the tower without the town shrinking to a strip. Since this terracen sits on the southern edge of old town the sun sets behind you. This lets the west side of the church and the houses on the point turn a warm gold in the setting light while the sea gets hints of pale pink and rich blues. You can also experiment with long exposures and a neutral density filter to smooth out the waves around the rocks so the water can mirror the sky. Mornings put the sun straight behind the church, creating a row silhouettes that give your composition a completely different feel. The spot is a short walk from the cathedral through the lanes of the old town, with lots of places to pause and shoot as you wind your way to this terrace.
