About Vietnam Military History Museum
The Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi is a massive site showcasing Vietnam’s military history from ancient times to the American and French wars. The grounds are immediately imposing with a 45m tower of stacked five pointed stars rising from the middle of the museum's entrance square, series of concrete buildings curving around it in a wide arc and heavy hardware lining both sides. Vietnamese and Soviet built jets and tanks sit on one side, with captured American and French equipment on the other, including a Chinook helicopter and a heavy transport plane. The main square also features a peace sculpture, where tree branches and doves rise out of the twisted wreckage of a B-52. To capture the tower and the curve of the main building in one frame, you will have to experiment with backing across the front square and using your widest lens. The outdoor aircraft work best when shot from low to the ground and close to a nose or wingtip, so the plane fills the frame against a blue sky. Late afternoon light is kindest to the tower and the curved front. If you want to explore inside the museum you will need a ticket, although you can shoot the MiG-21 hanging in the main lobby without one. (Hanoi, Hanoi, Vietnam)
