Rising 162 meters from the cliff face above Milford Sound, Lady Bowen Falls is the tallest waterfall in the fiord and one of the most dramatic subjects you can photograph in New Zealand. The falls are best captured from the water on one of the boat tours that pass close to the base, where you can fill the frame with the full drop against the dark, moss-covered rock. From shore, position yourself at the far left during low tide for a partial view framed by the fiord's steep walls. A wide angle lens works well to capture the waterfall in context with the surrounding peaks and reflective water, while a longer focal length lets you isolate the upper cascade. Overcast days are ideal here; soft diffused light reduces harsh contrast and brings out the deep greens of the surrounding rainforest. Early morning tends to offer calmer water for reflections.
