The chalk cliffs of Étretat are among the most dramatic coastal formations in Europe, and the view of Porte d'Aval, framed alongside the slender Aiguille needle rising 70 metres from the sea, is the signature shot of this stretch of Normandy coastline. From the clifftop path to the west, you get the classic elevated angle looking down through the arch toward the pebble beach and town, ideal for wide to standard focal lengths in the 24-50mm range. Down at beach level, you can work much closer to the base of the arch, using the smooth stones and surf as foreground elements. Golden hour light in the late afternoon and evening bathes the white chalk in warm tones and creates long shadows that add depth to the formations. The clifftop is accessible via a well-maintained path, though the beach approach involves a steep descent; low tide gives you the most space to move and compose freely. (Étretat, Normandy, France)
