Western Brook Pond is one of Newfoundland's most dramatic landscapes, a landlocked fjord carved by glaciers and walled by sheer cliffs rising over 600 meters straight from the water. The scale here is immense, and getting that across in a photo is your main challenge and opportunity. A wide angle lens helps capture the full height of the canyon walls reflected in the eerily clear, still water below. The classic composition is from the boat dock area, shooting straight into the gorge with the cliffs framing both sides and the water acting as a mirror on calm days. Overcast light actually works well here by softening harsh shadows on the cliff faces; midday sun can create extreme contrast that loses detail. The hike in is about 3 kilometers of flat trail through bog and forest, so wear waterproof footwear and bring a tripod for long exposures on the water.
