About Visovac Monastery

Visovac Monastery sits all alone on a small island out in the middle of the Krka river, inside Krka National Park. It's Franciscan, and the friars have been there since the fifteenth century, slowly planting cypresses and pines until the whole island turned into a garden with a monastery in it. The water around it is usually a rich turquoise. There are many ways to capture this amazing island. To get a broad view of the whole island there's a big pull-off on the mainland road just before the road starts winding down to the dock. There is also an observation deck on the opposite hillside sitting at the end of the Vukovica Podi Trail. Both of those viewpoints give you an amazing composition with the island sitting below you, ringed with trees and surrounded by the turquoise water. The island itself is only accessible by boat with crossings running from just down the hill, or you can take one of the park excursion boats from the Vidikovac Visovac Falls. You can shoot the bell tower through the cypresses, experiment with the low walls at the water's edge, and if you are lucky some of the peacocks wandering about like they own the place. Boats don't run all year, so check the national park's schedule before you drive out. Ideally aim to go on the first crossing of the day if you can, so you will have more space to set up and people-free composition options. (Brištane, Šibenik-Knin County, Croatia)
