Wadi Rum is a vast protected desert in southern Jordan, where towering sandstone cliffs, rust-colored dunes, and sweeping open plains create one of the most otherworldly landscapes you can photograph. Staying at a desert camp puts you right in the middle of it, with unobstructed views in every direction. Sunrise and sunset are the standout moments, when the rock faces glow deep red and orange and long shadows carve texture into the dunes. Try shooting from low angles on the sand to emphasize foreground patterns and lead the eye toward the cliffs. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the scale of the landscape, while a longer focal length lets you compress the layered rock formations in the distance. At night, the lack of light pollution makes this one of the best spots in the region for astrophotography. Wear sturdy footwear if you plan to climb dunes for elevated compositions.
