Wailing Widow Falls

Wailing Widow Falls drops 50 feet from the outflow of Loch na Gainmhich, spilling over a dramatic cliff edge into a tight rocky canyon in the Scottish Highlands. You can shoot from two very different perspectives: standing at the base of the canyon looking up gives you a powerful, compressed view of the falls framed by steep rock walls, while moving to the top lets you capture the loch emptying into the falls with a wide foreground. Overcast days are ideal here as the diffuse light keeps detail in both the white water and the dark surrounding rock. A wide angle lens works well in the canyon to capture the full height, and a polarizing filter helps cut glare on the water. The falls are a short walk from the A894, making access straightforward, though the ground can be slippery after rain. (Unapool, Sutherland, Scotland)
