About Wandflue
From the top of the Wandflue you look straight along the Gastlosen, a jagged row of pale grey limestone towers and walls on the border between Fribourg and Bern. On a clear day the view south opens up to the snowy Bernese Alps and the big Valais peaks behind them. Having a longer lens in your kit is handy for stacking those distant summits behind the nearer rock towers. The ridge line sits surrounded by green alpine meadows falling away below the rugged cliffs that make a perfect contrast with the bare grey stone. Lower sun early or late in the day brings out all the cracks and layers in the rock, which can be fun to experiment with to add some variety to your compositions. Most people start their hike from Musersbergli at the top of the Jaun chairlift, although it only runs when the weather allows, or at the Musersbergli Parking lot (Wandflue Summit Trailhead). The summit is accessible from a short detour branching off of the Gastlosen Tour loop trail. That detour is steep, rocky and not clearly unmarked, so be careful as you make your way to the summit. The whole loop is about 12.5 km and often takes most people four to five hours (plus time to pause and shoot along the hike). On the way down, there are alpine huts along the loop where you can rest and just take in the incredible views around you. (Jaun, Fribourg, Switzerland)
