Wat Phra Yai (Big Buddha Temple) sits just offshore on a tiny island with a scenic causeway. This little temple is home to a 12 metre golden Buddha seated calmly on top of the island that is actually big enough to spot from your plane as you fly into Samui. It looks out over the Gulf of Thailand, so it stands clean against open sky with nothing cluttering the background. You can start at the foot of the long staircase, which is lined with colourful carved serpents called nagas, and shoot up the steps to lead the eye toward the Buddha towering above. Up at the top you can work with the statue close, where the gold, mirrored tiles, and a ring of bronze prayer bells give you plenty of detail, plus the platform opens onto sea views toward Koh Phangan. Early morning brings soft, warm light onto the gold and the thinnest crowds, which is the easiest window for a clean shot. Come back near sunset and the sun drops behind the statue, turning it into a bold dark silhouette against a colourful sky. For a wider take, head to nearby Bangrak beach, also called Big Buddha beach, and frame the whole statue small on its hilltop across the water, often with fishing boats in front at golden hour. Midday is the one time to avoid, when hard overhead sun bounces off the gold and flattens the shape. Remember it is an active temple so be sure to dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered, and expect to remove your shoes in the temple area. (Koh Samui, Surat Thani, Thailand)
