Waverley Abbey Ruins
Waverley Abbey is a peaceful set of monastery ruins set beside the River Wey just outside Farnham in Surrey. Founded in 1128, it was the first Cistercian abbey in England, and today the remaining stone walls and archways create striking subjects within open meadows and gentle riverside scenery. Photographers can frame the surviving structures against wide grassy fields, reflections in the nearby river, or the surrounding woodland that softens the historic ruins. Morning mist often settles across the valley, adding atmosphere and depth to compositions, while late afternoon light highlights texture in the weathered stone. Accessible by footpaths from Waverley Lane and nearby parking areas, the site offers a calm and historically rich location for capturing England’s medieval heritage in a natural setting.
