About Wells-next-the-Sea Beach
Wells-next-the-Sea Beach is a wide stretch of pale sand on the North Norfolk coast, backed by dunes and woods. Close to 200 wooden beach huts sit along the edge of the trees painted in every colour of the rainbow. Those huts make an amazing subject. You can walk the sand in front of them and use the long row of roofs as a leading line, or pick out a single bright hut to contrast against the dark green pine trees. From the top of the dunes you can look down along the huts and out across the beach to highlight just how wide the beach can get. At low tide the water appears to disappear completely since it moves so far out, leaving shallow pools and wet ripples in the sand that make fun abstract patterns to experiment with. On summer evenings the sun sets off to the northwest over Holkham Bay, and the low light comes across the beach from the side creating amazing colours over the water. Overcast days work well here, letting the rich colours of the painted huts pop against a grey sky. The beach is easily accessible with paid parking at the end of Beach Road beside the Beach Café, or you can walk out from town along the sea wall path. Make sure to check the tide times before you head out since low tide will give you way more compositions options. Ideally try to plan on staying for sunset at low tide on a summer evening.
