About White Lake
White Lake sits in the middle of the Whiteshell Provincial Park, just off PR 307 in southeastern Manitoba. This is Canadian Shield country, so the shoreline is bare rock worn smooth, with jack pine leaning out over the water. The lake looks towards west from the resort end, making sunset the perfect time to be here. The warm evening sun pulls the colour out of the rock, and the wet edges along the waterline hold reflections. Bays and points break the shore up all along here, so a longer lens will let you stack them one behind another across the water. Calm mornings give you the chance to experiment with reflection photography and add a misty layer if you are lucky. Autumn turns the birch and tamarack gold against all that dark spruce. Winter is also photogenic when it all freezes over and you're down to bare rock against snow. Rainbow Falls is a short walk in from the resort road if you want a second subject while you're here. Manitoba charges a vehicle permit for the park, so check before you drive in. Bears and moose both live out here, so make a bit of noise on the trails. (Whiteshell Provincial Park, Manitoba, Canada)
