Wuppertal Schwebebahn
The Wuppertal Schwebebahn is a unique suspended monorail system running through the city that was first opened in 1901. Instead of running on tracks at ground level, the trains hang from an elevated rail, much of it following the path of the Wupper River below. It remains an active part of the city’s public transportion network and is one of the oldest systems of its kind still in operation. The combination of steel framework, moving trains, and the river beneath creates a distinct urban scene that changes along different sections of the line. Multiple access points throughout the city make it easy to explore different viewpoints, from riverbanks to nearby streets and bridges. Timing a visit with passing trains adds movement and scale to the setting. (Wuppertal, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany)
