About Yancopin Bridge
Yancopin Bridge stretches out across the Arkansas River on rust-brown steel trusses. It was originally built an railway crossing with two movable spans (a lift span and a swing span), now it carries the Delta Heritage Trail across the river. From the trail deck you can walk the whole thing and shoot straight down the line of trusses, which converge hard with a normal lens and turn into a solid wall of steel with a telephoto. The lift span with its two towers stands near the northeast bank over a section of pale sand where the river used to run, and the swing span sits over the channel closer to the southwest side, so walking the deck takes you over sand, then dark green water, then forest. Down at water level, the sandbar is a vantage point. Getting down onto during low water lets the bridge stretch away across the frame with the ripples in the sand for foreground, plus the trusses throw long shadows across the sand early and late in the day. The bridge lies northeast to southwest, so morning sun lights the downstream side and evening sun lights the upstream side, and either way the low angle turns the rusty steel a deep orange against the water. It's a gravel trail walk of a few kilometres from the Yancopin trailhead north of Watson. (Watson, Arkansas, United States)
