A Majestic Glacier-Fed Waterfall in Yoho National Park

Nothing captures the awe and wonder of Yoho National Park quite like the tremendous thunder of Takakkaw Falls. Plunging from a height of 380 meters, with an impressive 254-meter freefall, this is Canada's second-highest waterfall and an absolute dream for photographers. Fed by the Daly Glacier above, the falls are at their most powerful in July when glacial meltwater surges down the rugged cliffs, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The name "Takakkaw" means "it is magnificent" in Cree, and this iconic waterfall certainly lives up to its name.

Best Photography Opportunities & Best Time to Visit

Takakkaw Falls offers incredible photography opportunities from various angles, whether capturing its towering height from a distance or getting up close to feel the misty spray. Wide-angle shots from the viewing platforms near the parking lot emphasize the scale of the falls against the surrounding cliffs, while telephoto lenses allow photographers to zoom in on the intricate details of the cascading water and rock textures. The rushing water creates stunning long-exposure photography opportunities, where a tripod and neutral density filter can soften the flow into a silky mist.

The best time to visit is in mid to late summer, when the falls are at their peak flow due to glacial melt. Golden hour provides the most dramatic lighting, especially in the late afternoon when the sun illuminates the mist, often creating vivid rainbows near the base of the falls. Overcast days also work well for photography, as the diffused light enhances the deep textures of the rock face and prevents harsh contrasts. In autumn, the surrounding forest turns brilliant shades of gold and orange, adding extra depth and contrast to compositions.

For unique perspectives, the short hiking trail to the base of the falls allows photographers to experiment with different angles, capturing the powerful spray up close. Further along, the Yoho Valley Road provides stunning viewpoints, including areas where Takakkaw Falls can be framed by dense evergreens or the winding Kicking Horse River.

How to Get There

Takakkaw Falls is located in Yoho National Park, British Columbia, and is accessible via Yoho Valley Road from the Trans-Canada Highway (Hwy 1). The road is steep and winding, with tight switchbacks that may not accommodate larger RVs, but it is open seasonally from late June to early October. The falls are just a short 1-kilometer walk from the parking lot, making them one of the most accessible yet dramatic waterfalls in the Canadian Rockies.
