Wehrspann Lake Bridge sits near the eastern shore of Wehrspann Lake in the Chalco Hills Recreation Area, just southwest of Omaha. This low profile pedestrian bridge spans a narrow section of the lake, surrounded by open sky, tall grasses, and gently rolling hills. While the bridge itself is a simple structure with clean guardrails and subtle curvature, its strength as a photographic subject lies in its reflection, isolation, and symmetry. The lake's stillness during early morning hours makes it a reliable place for mirrored compositions, while surrounding trails provide alternate vantage points with soft natural framing. It is an accessible, peaceful location for photographers interested in landscape simplicity, reflection, and wide open skies.

Best Photography Opportunities

Reflections in Calm Water

The best view is from the trail to the southeast of the bridge, where you can position the entire span over the lake with a nearly perfect mirror image. Early morning is essential here, when the water is at its calmest and the sky holds pastel tones. Use a wide or standard lens to include the full reflection and nearby shoreline grasses. The bridge forms a clean horizontal anchor across the frame, and with the right light, the scene feels balanced and minimal. Fog or mist enhances the sense of isolation without obscuring the lines.

View from the Shoreline Trail

Moving to the side of the bridge gives you a chance to emphasize its shape and position within the lake. From this angle, you can use foreground reeds or plants to create depth and natural contrast against the bridge's structure. A mid-range zoom lens helps frame tighter compositions, especially if birds are perched along the rail or flying above. This shot works well in golden hour, when the bridge catches warm side light and shadows stretch across the water.

Overhead Drone View

With a drone, you can fly above the bridge and reveal its full placement within the lake's curve. From altitude, the bridge forms a subtle line cutting across the reflective surface, and the surrounding landscape unfolds with subtle detail like the wooded patches, water inlets, and curving trails. The best aerial images are made in the early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and the water still holds shape. Top down shots emphasize symmetry and the quiet design of the park layout. Follow local drone guidelines and avoid flying during busy trail hours.

Bridge Approach from the Walking Path

As you walk toward the bridge from either side, the path creates a natural leading line for compositions. Use a 35mm or 50mm lens to shoot down the path, keeping the bridge centered while allowing open sky and horizon to carry the upper half of the frame. This works particularly well at sunset, when the sky fills with color and the bridge itself becomes a silhouetted shape in the center of the scene.

Detail Studies with Water and Texture

Get closer to the bridge for minimalist compositions that feature railing shapes, water patterns, or shadows along the surface. These shots benefit from overcast light, which flattens contrast and brings out subtle texture. Reflections of birds, trees, or sky can be abstracted into soft layers against the waterline. Use a 50mm or longer lens to isolate shapes and work with shallow depth of field.

Best Time to Visit

Spring and fall offer the most varied light and color at Wehrspann Lake. In spring, new grass and trees add soft greens to the shoreline, while fall brings golden tones and wide open skies. Early morning is best for water clarity and reflection, especially before wind picks up. Sunset also works well, casting warm light across the bridge and trail, but reflections are less reliable in the evening. Overcast days are excellent for detail shots and minimalist compositions, particularly when clouds reflect evenly in the lake. Avoid midday hours when the light is harsh and the water surface is often disturbed by wind.

How to Get There

Chalco Hills Recreation Area is located just off Highway 370 in western Sarpy County, southwest of Omaha. Wehrspann Lake Bridge is accessed via walking and biking trails that loop around the lake. The main entrance to the park leads to a parking area with restroom facilities, maps, and paved trail access. From there, the bridge is an easy walk along the main loop path that circles the lake. Entry to the park is free, and the trails are open all year from morning to dusk. The bridge itself is pedestrian only, with a solid surface suitable for tripods, carts, or wheeled camera gear. Wildlife is common, especially in the early morning, so be prepared for birds or deer appearing along the shoreline or on the trail.

Recommended Photography Gear

Bring a wide angle lens to frame the full bridge and reflection, particularly during golden hour or foggy mornings. A standard zoom between 24 and 70mm works well for both side views and approach shots from the trail. A tripod is helpful for low light or long exposure conditions, especially when working with reflections or subtle movement on the water. A drone offers unique overhead views and should be used early in the day to avoid crowds and shifting light. A polarizing filter is helpful for controlling glare on the lake and improving color contrast in sky and water. Light walking shoes and a compact bag will keep you mobile along the trail loop.
