6th Street Viaduct
Completed in 2022, this sweeping concrete bridge spans the Los Angeles River and has quickly become one of the most striking pieces of infrastructure in the city, with its dramatic series of parabolic arches and the distinctive spiraling helical ramp curving down from the deck. Shoot from below along the riverbed to compress the arches into a strong repeating pattern, or position yourself on the bridge itself to use the curved bike ramp as a leading line. The underside at golden hour gives you warm light playing across the concrete geometry, while blue hour and night are when the bridge truly comes alive, with the arch lighting reflecting in the shallow river below. A wide-angle lens works well for the full span from river level, and long exposures at night will smooth out any water and add drama to the light trails from passing cars.
