Pico House
Built in 1870 as the grandest hotel in Los Angeles, Pico House anchors the historic core of the city and offers a facade rich with Italianate detail that rewards architectural photography. The three-story building's arched windows, symmetrical composition, and warm stone exterior photograph well at almost any time of day, but the soft directional light of early morning is ideal since the facade faces roughly east and catches the first hours of sun cleanly. Position yourself across the plaza to include the full building with foreground interest from the open square, or move in close to isolate the arched window details with a 50mm to 85mm lens. The surrounding El Pueblo area gives you context shots that layer the historic streetscape with the modern downtown skyline visible in the background. Street parking and the nearby Metro station make access straightforward, and weekday mornings tend to be quieter for unobstructed compositions. (Los Angeles, California, United States)
