About Abandoned Magnolia Service Station

This abandoned Magnolia Service Station sits on Old Route 66 in Texola, right near the Texas border. It opened around 1930 as a roadside filling station and has now been sitting abandoned for decades. What remains is a small boxy building with a wide flat canopy that once sheltered the pumps, now sagging and partly collapsed. The exterior pairs weathered grey wood with a lower wall of round stones, and a hand-painted sign where you can still see the faint paint lines still leans out front, phone number and all. It's an amazing hidden gem of a Route 66 ruin that is fun to experiment with capturing. On an overcast day the station has a haunted, eerie vibe. It stands right on an old crossroads so it is easy to find and free to photograph. While you are shooting remember that the building is fragile and unstable so make sure to keep to the outside. A small stone jail nearby makes an easy second stop in a town that is nearly empty now. Bring a wide lens for the canopy and something longer for the details. (Texola, Oklahoma, USA)
