About The Sandhills Curiosity Shop
In downtown Erick, the Sandhills Curiosity Shop fills an old storefront covered wall to wall in vintage road signs. It's the oldest brick building in town, first built as the City Meat Market. The shop sits a block off the old Route 66. Inside is packed with enamel signs, guitars, and old Americana, that is incredible to slowly explore. The exterior is covered in hand-painted messages and layered road signs cover the brick, along with a banner calling Erick the Redneck Capitol of the World. It now sits along a quiet street so its easy to shoot the front straight on to capture the full collage. You could also pick off a few signs or slogans as tighter frames if you want to experiment with more detail oriented photography. Soft light or a bit of shade helps, since hard sun blows out the painted metal. The shop hours are unpredictable and seeing the inside depends entirely on catching the owner, Harley, when he is inside. If the front door is closed when you arrive, you might get lucky and Harley will appear while you are capturing the outside so take your time. (Erick, Oklahoma, USA)
