The Abbey of Tongerlo was originally founded in 1128 and still home to an active Norbertine community. The grounds are peaceful and well kept with a pond, gardens, wooded areas, and a mix of architectural styles spanning centuries. The church dates back to the 1850s and has a bright, high white interior with stained glass and vaulted ceilings. The gatehouse and the abbot's house are two of the more photogenic buildings on the grounds. The whole complex has a quiet, timeless feel that pairs well with slow, careful shooting. Sunset over the abbey grounds is worth timing your visit for. The abbey's most impressive possession is a 16th century replica of Leonardo da Vinci's Last Supper, covering nearly 34 square metres. It was painted by Andrea Solario under Da Vinci's supervision, and some art historians believe Da Vinci himself painted certain faces. It is considered the most faithful surviving copy of the original. Photography is not allowed in the area where the painting is displayed, to protect its fragile textures. The church and grounds free to enter and explore with guided tours available on Sundays. (Westerlo, Antwerp Province, Belgium)
