Amalfi's coastal townscape is one of the most densely layered urban scenes in Italy, with pastel buildings stacked up the cliffside, the striped facade of the Cathedral of Sant'Andrea anchoring the center, and the deep blue Tyrrhenian Sea filling the foreground. The classic shot is from the water, so consider hiring a small boat or catching a ferry to get the full panoramic spread of the town rising against the limestone cliffs. From land, the harbor breakwater gives you a strong vantage point to compress the scene with a telephoto lens in the 70-200mm range, while a wide angle works well from the beach to include the boats in the foreground. Golden hour in the morning brings warm light directly onto the facade of the cathedral and the lower town before the cliffs cast shadows. Afternoons can be tricky with harsh contrast, but the elevated road above town on the SS163 offers excellent elevated compositions looking down across the rooftops and out to sea.
