Atrani is one of the smallest towns in Italy, squeezed dramatically between steep cliffs on the Amalfi Coast, and its compact waterfront packs an enormous amount of visual character into a tiny space. The combination of pastel-colored buildings stacked up the hillside, a small black sand beach, and the church of San Salvatore de Birecto framing the scene gives you a classic southern Italian composition that rewards careful framing. Shoot from the beach looking back toward the town to capture the layered facades rising into the cliffs, or position yourself at the edge of the small piazza to use the archways and stairways as foreground framing. Golden hour light hits the buildings beautifully in the late afternoon, warming the yellows and terracottas. A wide to standard zoom in the 24-50mm range works well here. The beach is easily walkable from nearby Amalfi, just a short path along the coast. (Atrani, Campania, Italy)
