Angel of the North Statue
The Angel of the North is a monumental steel sculpture designed by artist Antony Gormley. Completed in 1998, it stands 20 meters tall with a wingspan of 54 meters, making it one of the largest angel sculptures worldwide. Constructed from weathering steel, the statue's rich, oxidized surface creates a dynamic contrast against the often grey northern skies, providing photographers with compelling visual compositions. Situated on a hilltop overlooking the A1 and A167 roads, the Angel is easily accessible and visible to over 33 million people annually. For optimal lighting, visit during sunrise or sunset when the sculpture's surfaces reflect the changing hues of the sky. Ample parking is available on-site, including spaces for coaches and bicycles. The Angel of the North not only symbolizes the region's industrial heritage but also serves as a poignant subject for photographers seeking to capture its grandeur and significance.
