Arthington Viaduct
Arthington Viaduct is a sweeping 21-arch sandstone railway viaduct that curves elegantly over the River Wharfe, offering one of the most satisfying bridge compositions in Yorkshire. The gentle curve is the key feature here, so position yourself along the riverbank to capture the arches receding into the distance rather than shooting straight on. A longer focal length, around 70 to 200mm, compresses the arches beautifully and emphasizes the curve. The surrounding woodland and river reflections add depth, making this equally rewarding in all four seasons, though autumn colour and spring greenery both frame the warm sandstone particularly well. Golden hour light from the east catches the stonework in the morning, picking out the texture of the arches. Access is via footpaths from Arthington village or along the riverbank; the ground near the water can be muddy, so sturdy footwear is advised. (Castley, West Yorkshire, England)
