Ashness Jetty
Ashness Jetty is a small, weathered wooden dock on the western shore of Derwentwater, framing one of the most classic Lake District compositions available to photographers. The jetty itself acts as a natural leading line drawing the eye out across the water toward the fells beyond, with Skiddaw and Blencathra rising in the distance on clear days. Shoot from low on the shoreline to include foreground rocks or reflections, or step back slightly to use the full length of the jetty as your anchor. Early morning is ideal, when mist often sits on the lake and the light is soft and directional; autumn adds rich color to the surrounding trees and hillsides. A wide angle lens in the 16-24mm range works well here to take in both the jetty and the mountain backdrop. Parking is limited on the narrow lane above, so arrive early, especially on weekends.
