A short but steady climb out of Keswick brings you to the edge of Walla Crag, with its stunning panoramic view over the valley and Derwentwater far below. The summit is marked by a simple cairn, with amazing compositions sitting in every direction. On clear days you can even see the Catbells and the Newlands fells rising on the far shore of Derwentwater. Skiddaw and Blencathra fill the view to the north, with Keswick itself tucked into the valley below. Shooting from right along the crag edge gives the cleanest views over the lake. Evening is the best time to come. The lake catches the last bits of light while the fells behind stack into layers of silhouette, and in August the heather across the summit turns a deep purple that adds a pop of colour to the foreground. You can easily hike in from the Great Wood car park. There is no fee to visit and no restriction on access, so you can plan easily shooting adventure around how you like to shoot.
