ASTRA Museum Windmills
The traditional windmills at Muzeul ASTRA in Sibiu offer photographers a glimpse into Romania’s rural heritage within one of Europe’s largest open air museums. Set in the forested landscape of Pădurea Dumbrava, the historic wooden windmills stand in a natural clearing surrounded by grass, trees, and traditional village buildings. Their tall wooden frames, rotating blades, and weathered textures create strong subjects for rustic and cultural photography. The surrounding museum grounds feature winding paths, small lakes, and preserved farm structures that add context and depth to compositions. Early morning light filtering through the trees often creates a calm atmosphere, while late afternoon brings warm tones to the wood and landscape. Easily explored on foot within the museum grounds, these windmills provide an excellent opportunity to photograph traditional Romanian architecture in a natural setting. (Sibiu, Romania)
