Bâlea Lake
Bâlea Lake is a glacial lake sitting at 2,034 metres in the Făgăraș Mountains, reached via the dramatic Transfăgărășan Highway, and its combination of mirror-still water, jagged peaks, and rolling alpine meadows makes it one of Romania's most photogenic high-altitude locations. For the strongest compositions, position yourself on the rocky northern shoreline to capture the lake's full oval shape with the surrounding ridgeline reflected in the water on calm mornings. Early morning light is ideal, especially when low clouds or mist drift through the peaks above, adding depth and atmosphere. A wide-angle lens works well to include both the foreground rocks and the sky, while a telephoto lets you isolate details along the ridge. The road and cable car station are just above the lake, so access is straightforward in summer; in winter the lake freezes and the snow-covered landscape offers a completely different, equally compelling set of shots.
