Balnakeil Church Ruins
Balnakeil Church is a roofless 18th-century ruin sitting on a remote stretch of Scotland's far northwest coast, just minutes from the village of Durness, with a small cemetery still in active use surrounding it. The weathered stone walls, worn gravestones, and sweeping views toward the sandy bay make this a richly layered subject for photography. Work the interior for frames that use the collapsed walls as natural framing devices, pointing your lens toward the sky or the dunes beyond. A wide angle lens suits the dramatic open sky and surrounding landscape, while a longer focal length lets you isolate carved grave markers against the soft coastal light. Overcast days are ideal here, as diffused light brings out the texture in the stone without harsh shadows. The site is easily accessed on foot from a small parking area nearby, and the soft Atlantic light in the late afternoon gives the ruins a particularly atmospheric quality.
