This circular Modernist landmark, designed by Vladimir Ossipoff and completed in 1969, is one of the most architecturally striking buildings in Honolulu. The cylindrical form, wrapped in repeating concrete fins that filter the tropical light, gives you strong geometric patterns to work with at almost any angle. Walk the full perimeter to find where the fins catch the most dramatic shadows, which are sharpest in the mid-morning when the sun is still low enough to rake across the facade at an angle. A wide-angle lens lets you emphasize the curve and verticality from close range, while a short telephoto helps you compress and isolate the repeating fin pattern into an abstract composition. The building sits at a busy intersection, so use the surrounding sidewalks to frame it against the sky and keep distracting street-level clutter out of the shot.
