Baptistery of Saint John
One of Florence's oldest and most visually striking structures, the Baptistery of Saint John rewards photographers with its geometric Romanesque facade, striped white and green marble cladding, and iconic bronze doors. The east-facing Gates of Paradise by Ghiberti are a must-shoot, ideally in the soft morning light that illuminates the gilded relief panels without harsh shadows. Position yourself low and close to emphasize the door's detail and scale, or step back to frame the full octagonal form against the Cathedral and Campanile. A wide angle lens works well for capturing the building in its piazza context, while a longer focal length lets you isolate the intricate facade patterns. The square gets crowded quickly, so arriving at or just after opening time gives you cleaner shots with fewer tourists. Overcast days are excellent for detail work on the marble and bronze surfaces, reducing glare and evening out contrast. (Florence, Tuscany, Italy)
