BärenPark

BärenPark - Photo by Shawn M. Kent1 / 1

BärenPark, located just below Bern’s Old Town along the Aare River, is a modern bear enclosure that provides a rare opportunity to photograph brown bears in a spacious, naturalistic setting. The park is home to several bears who roam freely among grassy slopes, rock formations, and wooded areas, offering dynamic wildlife shots with the added bonus of Bern’s historic skyline as a backdrop. Elevated viewing platforms and riverside paths allow for a variety of angles and compositions, making it a versatile spot for both telephoto and wide-angle photography. Accessible year-round and just a short walk from the Nydegg Bridge, BärenPark is a compelling destination for photographers interested in blending urban and wildlife themes. According to legend, the founder of Bern, Duke Berchtold V of Zähringen, vowed to name the city after the first animal he encountered on a hunt in the area. That animal turned out to be a bear (Bär in German). He kept his word, and the bear became the symbol of the city. (Bern, Switzerland)
