Baslow Edge

Above the village of Baslow in the Peak District, a broken line of gritstone crags called Baslow Edge runs along the top of the moor. It faces west over the Derwent Valley. Chatsworth House and its estate sit to the south, above a patchwork of dry stone walls. Evening light is amazing here, especially when the sun drops away over the valley in front of you. On cold mornings mist pools down in the valley and changes the mood completely. Old millstones lie just under the lip of the edge, left over from quarrying days. There are two distict landmarks sitting along this ridge: Eagle Stone, a freestanding block of gritstone roughly 8 metres tall, and Wellington's Monument, a plain stone cross marking Waterloo. Both are perfect to pair with a setting sun. If you are lucky you may come across some of the Highland cattle that often graze the slopes here. Although they are used to people, remember to keep your distance and don't feed them. The Curbar Gap car park sits right at the start of the trail, but it only has room for about 30 cars. So if you are aiming to shoot sunset on a weekend you'll want to arrive early. (Baslow, Derbyshire, England)
