Beaulieu Abbey
Founded in 1204, Beaulieu Abbey offers a compelling mix of standing medieval architecture and atmospheric ruins set within the New Forest. The converted Refectory, now the parish church, gives you strong Gothic arches and warm stone interiors to work with, while the remaining ruined walls and foundations create graphic shapes against the sky. Shooting from low angles emphasizes the height and texture of the surviving stonework, and wide to standard focal lengths work well for capturing the interplay between intact structure and open ruin. Overcast days are ideal here, softening harsh shadows and bringing out the warm tones in the limestone without blowing highlights; early morning visits also reward you with quieter grounds before tour groups arrive. The site is well maintained and accessible, with clear paths around the grounds that let you move between interior and exterior compositions easily. (Beaulieu, Hampshire, England)
