Belém Tower, or Torre de Belém, is one of Lisbon’s most iconic landmarks, situated on the northern bank of the Tagus River in the historic Belém district. Built in the early 16th century as both a defensive fortress and a ceremonial gateway to the city, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is a stunning example of Manueline architecture, adorned with intricate carvings, domed turrets, and maritime motifs. Its unique position, partially surrounded by water during high tide, provides photographers with dramatic compositions, especially when capturing reflections on the river’s surface. Inside, spiral staircases lead to a terrace offering sweeping views of the Tagus River and the surrounding area. Sunset is the ideal time to visit, as the warm light casts a golden glow over the tower, contrasting beautifully with the deep blue of the water and sky, while evening illumination transforms the structure into a captivating subject for night photography and long exposures. Easily accessible by public transport or a short drive from central Lisbon, the tower is surrounded by other significant landmarks, including the Monument to the Discoveries and Jerónimos Monastery, making it part of a richly historical and picturesque area that no visitor or photographer should miss.
