About Berat
Berat is a historic town that is filled with rows of white houses, and over 1,000 windows, rising above the Osum River. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is overflowing with photogenic views at every turn. From the from the Gorica side of the river you are far enough away to stack the layers of houses and the castle walls all into one frame. Using a telephoto lens from that side of the river is fun to experiment with as it compresses the rows into patterns of rectangles and white plaster. The houses face south across the Osum River, so they are in the light most of the day. Although the midday sun will flatten them and blows out the plaster. Late afternoon is the perfect time to plan for, when the sun comes in low from the west and spreads across the houses, warming the roof tiles. Up in the castle you get a completely different shooting experience. The cobbled lanes, Byzantine church ruins, and families still living behind the walls make interesting compositions. It is a steep climb from Mangalem on stone paving, or a short taxi ride. Make sure to plan lots of time so you can slowly explore town and find just the right compositions to match your shooting style. (Berat, Berat County, Albania)
