Bishop's House
When the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese was moved to Portland from Oregon City, Archbishop William Hickley Gross constructed the Bishop's House as his official residence. After the cathedral moved to a larger location the house has had a colorful history. Once part of the ‘Portland Underground’, folklore has it that a speak-easy occupied the Bishop’s House during Prohibition, with a direct telephone line running to the Police Station a block away. Reputedly, the building also quartered a Chinese ‘gentlemen’s club’ around the turn of the prior Century, featuring gambling, “loose women,” and opium. -from Wikipedia
