Blackwell Island Lighthouse
Perched at the northern tip of Roosevelt Island, this small Gothic Revival lighthouse offers a surprisingly intimate waterfront composition with the East River framing both sides and the towers of Astoria and the Bronx visible in the distance. You can get close to the lighthouse itself, shooting upward with a wide angle lens to emphasize the stone turret against the sky, or step back along the narrow promenade to use the winding path as a leading line toward the structure. A short telephoto works well for isolating the lighthouse against the river or the Queens shoreline behind it. Golden hour light from the west catches the warm stone facade beautifully in late afternoon, while overcast days reduce harsh shadows and bring out the texture of the 1872 masonry. The island is easily reached by the Roosevelt Island Tramway or the F train, and the northern park area is uncrowded, giving you space to work without interruption.
