Roosevelt Island Bridge
This steel vertical lift bridge offers a surprisingly underused vantage point for photographing the East River and the Manhattan and Queens skylines. You can shoot from either end of the bridge or from Roosevelt Island's northern tip nearby, using the bridge's industrial framework of girders and cables as a strong graphic element in the foreground. The symmetry of the lift tower works well for centered compositions, while a tighter focal length helps compress the midtown skyline in the background. Golden hour light in the late afternoon catches the metal structure beautifully and reflects off the water below. The bridge itself is open to pedestrians and cyclists, making access straightforward; a 24-70mm or wider lens gives you flexibility to work both the structure and the surrounding waterscape. Midweek visits tend to be quieter, giving you more room to compose without foot traffic in your frame. (Roosevelt Island, New York City, United States)
