Blue Sky Mausoleum
Blue Sky Mausoleum is a striking Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structure completed in 2004 from his original 1928 drawings, sitting within Forest Lawn Cemetery and offering a rare chance to photograph realized architectural history. The soaring central monolith and cascading limestone stairs create strong vertical and geometric lines that reward a wide angle lens, especially when shooting low from the base of the stairs to emphasize the upward thrust of the design. Overcast days work beautifully here, as diffused light eliminates harsh shadows and lets the texture and pale stone tones come through evenly. Morning visits on clear days give you softer directional light before the sun climbs too high. The structure sits in an open area of the cemetery, giving you room to step back for full compositions or move close to isolate the geometric details. Respectful, quiet behavior is expected as this remains an active cemetery. (Buffalo, New York, United States)
